The mountains in winter, with their expanses of pure, white, untracked snow, make a wonderful playground. Yet one must not forget that they remain wilderness areas with their own risks and rules that must be respected. Before setting off snowshoeing or ski touring, prepare for your trip by finding out about snow conditions, taking appropriate equipment and respecting the basic safety rules.

There are several websites that will be useful for your preparation:

Understanding the risks associated with the snow requires a good knowledge of the mountain environment. This comes with experience and training (first aid, courses on snow pack conditions, instruction in how to use avalanche transceivers, etc).
