Serre-ponçon lake
The Durance river, a tributary of the Rhone, has caused terrible flooding, such as the 1843 and 1856 floods. The entire Avignon area was completely devastated. A dam construction project was conceived at this time to subdue the waters of the Durance and limit flooding. The dam filling programme required kite surf, lake mountainthe resettlement of 1500 people. Construction started in 1955 and was completed in 1961. This is the largest dam in Europe and a huge tourist attraction.

Relaxation is guaranteed on the beaches of the Serre-Ponçon lake and you can take a refreshing dip when the summer heat is at its height. For the braver among you, have a go at kite surfing.
